We know that palliative care should begin before the end of life. But what does early actually mean – and how do we translate that principle into everyday cancer care? This seminar will present international Delphi findings revealing when clinicians believe different palliative care conversations should begin, and what they need to make these conversations possible. It will then follow the research from evidence to action, exploring how an MRFF-funded program is co-designing, implementing and evaluating a new model of integrated palliative care for children and young people with cancer across Australian health services.

Dr Madeleine Juhrmann is a health services and implementation researcher specialising in palliative care, quality of life, communication and innovative models of care for children, adolescents and young adults with serious illness. Her research focuses on integrating supportive and palliative care alongside active treatment, improving access to high-quality care across the lifespan, and translating evidence into clinical practice, health policy and sustainable models of care.
