This session will spotlight the OPTIMISE clinical trial, a cutting-edge initiative being run in conjunction with the ZERO Childhood Cancer program and is matching patients with high-risk cancers to novel targeted therapies based on tumours genetic makeup. It will also highlight Australia’s first CAR T-cell therapy trial for children with brain cancer.

- Conjoint Professor David Ziegler
Conjoint Professor David Ziegler is Senior Paediatric Oncologist at the Kids Cancer Centre based at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. He is also the Group Leader of the Brain Tumours Group at Children’s Cancer Institute, and Chair of Clinical Trials for the ZERO Childhood Cancer Program. He also holds a conjoint appointment with UNSW Sydney, and is head of the neuro-oncology program at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick (SCH), and runs the clinical trials program at the Kids Cancer Centre.
An important focus of David’s work is developing new clinical trials that bring research discoveries into the clinic to treat children with the most aggressive cancers. He has developed and led several innovative national and international trials for children with brain tumours, leukaemia, and solid tumours.
- Dr Neevika Manohran
Dr Neevika Manoharan is a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist/Oncologist and Subspecialist in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology. She is interested in the development of early-phase clinical trials and is currently leading the development of an early phase combination clinical trial for paediatric patients with recurrent or relapsed primary brain tumours through the international consortium, CONNECT (Collaborative Network for Neuro-Oncology Clinical Trials).
Neevika’s primary research interests are in rare and orphan paediatric brain tumours and the germline genomics of paediatric cancers. Neevika is co-leading the CNS subgroup of the Zero program and is a member of the germline working group.
